A resource to help educate and motivate the citizen’s of Cebu to stop burning their plastic waste.

How does home plastic waste burning affect our health?

Most people who burn their plastic domestic waste do not realize how harmful this practice is to their health and to the environment. Current research indicates that backyard-burning of waste plastic is far more harmful to our health than previously thought. It can increase the risk of heart disease, aggravate respiratory ailments such as asthma and emphysema, and cause rashes, nausea, and headaches, damage to the nervous system, kidney or liver, and damage to the reproductive and development system. The burning of plastic cups, snack bags, candy wrappers, market bags and a simple drinking straw releases deadly POISONS into the air. These poison gases can readily be absorbed through the skin and lungs.

Poison smoke from plastic burning

The most dangerous poison smoke can be caused by burning plastics. When plastics are burned, harmful quantities of highly toxic chemicals are emitted. They accumulate in our bodies and they cause cancers to form. Pregnant mothers give it directly to their babies even before birth. The poisons settle on our fruit trees and on our rice fields. They also mix with our rain and go into our drinking water.

We breathe, eat and drink these poisons every day.

Burning of plastics and waste

Surveys show that home burning of plastic trash is widespread across areas all-over the Philippines. Waste is either burned outside in the yard, or inside in ovens. Waste that is burned can include plastic bags, wrappers, and bottles. These plastic materials need to be collected and disposed of properly. Air emissions from home burning are released directly into the house and into our neighborhoods and they spread throughout our island.

It is very important that we stop burning our plastic trash. Proper disposal by collecting in bags and sending it to a barangay waste disposal site is the only and best solution.

The Effect

Filipinos die 20 years sooner and mostly from cancer than do people from countries that properly dispose of plastic trash.
